I have been working hard to use more green products in my home. You can read about my laundry soap
here. In the same way I am trying to get a better grip on my cleaning products. Now, don’t get me wrong. There are some things in my mind that bleach will always be able to fix. But, I am learning that things like window cleaner or an all purpose cleaner can be made at home with simple ingredients. First of all let me tell everyone there are few things baking soda can’t help with. Also, by mixing it with a little hydrogen peroxide you get an oxi-clean type product. But, be careful and use small amounts and do not shake them up.
What you will need:
White Vinegar
Borax (can be found in the laundry isle)
Washing soda (I use arm & hammer washing soda which isn’t the same as baking soda should be near the Borax)
Castile Liquid Soap
Essential oil- I use lemon
Tea Tree Oil
Spray bottles (I found some made in the USA ones at Walmart for a dollar each)
Now here is what you can make with your ingredients.
All Purpose cleaner/disinfectant: Mix 2 cups water and about 5 drops of castile soap, 15 drops of lemon essential oil. Once the lid is on I tip the bottle back and forth a few times not shake it up and then use. You may want a little more or less soap depending on what you use this on. Rinse with water or dry with a towel. I would not recommend this on glass as it will streak. Great for toilets, kitchen counters, and other places you may normally use a disinfectant cleaner.
Window Cleaner: ¼ tablespoon of the liquid castile soap, 4 tablespoons vinegar, 2 ½ cups water. Pour this in your spray bottle and shake. I use newspapers to dry mirrors and windows because it is a great way to recycle old newspaper and it leaves no streaks!
All Purpose Spray Cleaner: 1 teaspoon Borax, ½ teaspoon washing soda, 2 tablesoons vinegar, ½ teaspoon castile soap, 2 cups very hot tap water. Add all the ingredients into the spray bottle and add the hot water last. Shake the bottle gently till everything has dissolved and then you are good to go. Great for everyday messes and it can really tackle grease and build up. The disinfectant cleaner is good for wiping down surfaces but if you want to scrub toothpaste out of a sink or the top of the stove this is good.
I recommend testing what you use these cleaning products on. Pick a small area and use it to make sure it works for you. These are the mixes I use but you may want more or less. Do not be afraid to adjust the amount if you need too.
Also, if you want a great way to freshen a room sprinkle baking soda on your carpet and let it sit for 30 minutes then vacuum up. If you want something like a candle but without burning take the gelatin that has no flavor or dye and add prepare as normal adding in some essential oils. Put it into glass jars and I like to put the mason jar lid on with a few holes so nothing gets in. It can really freshen up a room and when the smell runs out you can make more easily.
